The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas || Book Review

Hey People! I am going to do a book review for ‘The Hate U Give’ by Angie Thomas today! The Hate U Give is a Realistic, Contemporary fiction, following a sixteen-year-old Starr Carter after she witnessed her childhood best friend, Khalil who was unarmed, at the hands of a police officer. So, without further ado, let’s get into the review!

“That’s the problem. We let people say stuff, and they say it so much that it becomes okay to them and normal for us. What’s the point of having a voice if you’re gonna be silent in those moments you shouldn’t be?”

Synopsis:

Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed.

Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.

But what Starr does or does not say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.

My thoughts: Introduction

Let’s start off with the family aspect of the story. I loved the way Angie wrote about Starr’s family. The strong bonding between Starr and her family members. The family aspect of the story is very realistic and I loved this book because of the love between Starr and her family members. 

Secondly, the pacing for this book was in medium speed. Not too fast, not too slow, just right which I really thank Angie for doing it because this book.. People.. This book pulled me out of my Reading Slump like a professional!

Thirdly, this was an impactful read. I cried at page 66 and I can’t stop crying since then. I did learn a lot of things from this book that I can apply into my life. (I am not going to spoil anything but I think you should read this book and find out about it yourself!) 

Finally, the friendship/boyfriend bond between Starr and her friends (Except Hailey) and Starr’s boyfriend. The friendship and boyfriend aspect of the story was very well thought out! I really loved how the friendship/boyfriend aspect was played out. 

Writing:

I didn’t really like the writing style for this book in the beginning because of the slangs. But, after some time, I have gotten used to the slangs and when it does not bother me anymore, I started to fall in love with Angie’s writing style! The writing style for this book was crisp and articulate and just… MARVELOUS!

Angie kept her writing consistence throughout the book! I love it when authors keep their writing consistence because consistency plays a huge part in books.

There’s some wonderful magic in Angie’s writing style too, it can make you cry in a second and laugh in another. It’s magical, seriously. I need more of Angie’s writing in my life. 

Characters:

Starr: I loved her. She’s one of my favorite fictional characters now! Starr’s strong, brave and kind. Just, everything about her is wonderful and the fact that she’s a little afraid of her mother is hilarious. 

Hailey: She sure got on my nerves! I hate Hailey! Yes, Hate instead of hated. Starr treated her as a friend but Hailey? Ha! She did not! She’s an annoying child who does not know how to say ‘SORRY’ and.. (Okay, I should stop here before things get out of hand)

Seven: I loved his love for his sisters. He protected them with his life. Although Seven may be a little annoying at time, I found him to be hilarious and I loved his character development in this book!

Maya: Starr’s Best Friend. She’s pretty cool actually. I liked how she said all those stuff to Hailey and how she backed up Starr. I loved her character development in this book as well!

Chris (A.K.A Starr’s BF): I loved him! I loved his character development in this book too! He’s funny and he cared about Starr…like a lot. (Chris is also in one of my favorite characters list)

Overall:

I am giving this book a 99.75%. It was a well-written book and I think everyone should read it! (I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU TO READ IT)
