Hey Guys! It is Max here and I will officially be doing my very first book review of 2018 and that book is called ‘Before I Fall’ By Lauren Oliver! My 2018 book reading starts off on a good note because I absolutely enjoyed reading Lauren Oliver’s debut novel- Before I Fall! So, I sincerely hope that the books that I read in 2018 will all be great and fantastic! Now, let us jump right into my mini-summary of the novel!
Before I Fall is a Young Adult, Contemporary Fiction following Samantha Kingston as she relived the day of her death over and over again and discovered that everything led to everything and also, she found out that she had hurt the people who cared for her.
So, without further ado, let us jump right into the book review for the novel!
- All thoughts and opinions are on my own and…
- This is a spoiler-free review. So, feel free to stay until the end!
“The last laugh, the last cup of coffee, the last sunset, the last time you jump through a sprinkler, or eat an ice-cream cone, or stick your tongue out to catch a snowflake. You just don’t know.”- Before I Fall, Lauren Oliver.
For popular high school senior Samantha Kingston, February 12—”Cupid Day”—should be one big party, a day of valentines and roses and the privileges that come with being at the top of the social pyramid. And it is…until she dies in a terrible accident that night.
However, she still wakes up the next morning. In fact, Sam lives the last day of her life seven times, until she realizes that by making even the slightest changes, she may hold more power than she ever imagined.
My thoughts: The Beginning
Let us hit off the high note with this review by complimenting on the book cover (movie edition)! It is so beautiful with all of its glass effects and Zoey Deutch is in them which makes the cover 10 times more gorgeous than it already is. Plus, the blueness and the font of the book title are perfect in their positions! Therefore, I love this cover more than the original one!
Now, with the cover review aside, let us get into the actual book review.
Let us kick off the book review with the pacing of the novel. The pacing of the novel was really quick and it, surprisingly, kept me going page after page as the book does not bore me to death and instead, it made me energetic and curious to know and understand what is going to happen next or rather- the next scene. Thus, I enjoyed the pacing of the book and I am sure that you will enjoy it too as the pacing had a perfect equilibrium on both ends.
Moving on, we have the atmosphere that revolved around this novel. The atmosphere for this novel was really creepy and sad because what would you do if you have to relive the day of your death over and over again? What would you do to change? To be a better person in a day? And those are the creepy portions of the novel. The sad part is the death that the protagonist had to go through day after day after day but still on the same day. Therefore, I loved the atmosphere of this novel!
Furthermore, the tone of the novel was really deep which made the topics that the author wanted to discuss with her readers even more meaningful because not only the book itself is dark, the meaning of the novel is dark as well. Therefore, I enjoyed the tone that the author had added to the story.
Now, to the question that we have all been waiting for: Is it well constructed? No plot holes?
The answer to that question is yes! I thought that the novel was very well constructed because there were not any plot holes and everything that the author was trying to say was clearly presented in the book. Also, the characters in the book were also very well developed! Thus, I loved how the book was constructed!
Moving on, we have my favourite and most relatable quote in the book and that marvellous quote is:
“Maybe you can afford to wait. Maybe for you there’s a tomorrow. Maybe for you there’s one thousand tomorrows, or three thousand, or ten, so much time you can bathe in it, roll around it, let it slide like coins through you fingers. So much time you can waste it. But for some of us there’s only today. And the truth is, you never really know.”- Before I Fall, Lauren Oliver.
I can relate to this quote because you will never know when you are going to die or pass on. Therefore, we must be grateful for everything that we have on earth.
Moving on, we have the ending and the beginning of the novel that I would like to discuss with all of you here. I thought the beginning of the novel was very good because the very first sentence in page one had already hooked me into the story by making me desperate to find out what has transpired in her life or the days of her life.
In addition, the ending was tear-jerking because not only she had changed and made herself a better person to be reflected on, she had also shown the true beauty inside of her instead of the meanness that she had put up at the beginning of the novel. Therefore, I loved both the ending and the beginning sentences!
Finally, we have the relationship topic that I would like to discuss in this review. The relationship that Samantha and Kent had by the end of the novel was, in my personal opinion, really forced because you cannot just fall in love with someone that kissed you on the lips for no apparent reason. However, I found the relationship that she had, again by the end of the novel, with her parents to be extremely genuine because of the changes that she had brought about. Thus, I some sort liked the relationships in this novel.
Now, let us move into the writing section of this review!
Writing: The Middle
The writing style for this novel was a phenomenon because Lauren Oliver not only able to make the writing style descriptive but also poetic and lyrical at the same time. She entwined all the characters and the scenes perfectly that made the readers captured every single one of the pictures that she wanted to put into her readers’ head.
In addition, she made the story so devastating and so full of rage that readers’ would crave for more of the life of Samantha and the way that she experiences and changes throughout the course of the days that she has relived.
Furthermore, I found out that some readers’ on the internet said that the book was very repetitive. Well, I would not really disagree on that because the first three days that she had relived were quite similar to one another. However, as you dive deeper into the novel, it would not be the actions on the same days will not be the same anymore. Therefore, I enjoyed the way that Lauren Oliver had written this wonderful and crafty novel!
Now, let us move into the characters section of this review!
Characters: The 3/4 Section Of The Review
“How is it possible, I think, to change so much and not be able to change anything at all?”- Before I Fall, Lauren Oliver.
Kent McFuller: I did not like him as much as I would have thought because he was a little forced to be with Samantha and there was not actually a bunch of chemistry between the two. However, I liked how he was always so straight-forward with his words and never had a second thought about them. Therefore, I am giving his character a percentage of 45/100%.
Samantha Kingston: I disliked her at the beginning of the novel because she was extremely bitchy and mean to other people. Also, the meanness was up to a point where a character that she bullied attempted to commit suicide. However, her character developed as the book moved forward and I came to a sense that I started liking or rather- loving Samantha because she had changed from meanness to a kind-hearted loving girl. Thus, I liked the development that Lauren had deposited into her.
Lindsay Edgecomb: I did not like her at all. She does not give a shit about what she had done to hurt others’ feelings and she was just an overall mean person but there was a scene which presented her as a redeemable character and although the book had ended, I still had some hope for her to change to a better person. Thus, I am not going to rate her or anything but her character had hope.
Now, let us move into the overall section of this review!
Overall: The Ending
Substantially, I am giving this book a 90% rating! It did really change me as a person and I would highly recommend all of you to give this novel an attempt to see if you like it or not!
