King’s Cage by Victoria Aveyard

Hey Guys! I will be doing a book review for King’s Cage by Victoria Aveyard today! King’s Cage is the third book in the Red Queen series and THREE WORDS: It is awesome! This review contains a spoiler-free section for the ones who have yet to read this book and a spoilery section. So, without further ado, let’s get into the review!

*Note: All thoughts and Opinions are on my own!*

“The war is a ruse, a cover to keep Reds under control. One conflict may end, but another will always begin.”- King’s Cage, Victoria Aveyard.

Synopsis:

Mare Barrow is a prisoner, powerless without her lightning, tormented by her lethal mistakes. She lives at the mercy of a boy she once loved, a boy made of lies and betrayal. Now a king, Maven Calore continues weaving his dead mother’s web in an attempt to maintain control over his country—and his prisoner.

As Mare bears the weight of Silent Stone in the palace, her once-ragtag band of newbloods and Reds continue organizing, training, and expanding. They prepare for war, no longer able to linger in the shadows. And Cal, the exiled prince with his own claim on Mare’s heart, will stop at nothing to bring her back.

When blood turns on blood, and ability on ability, there may be no one left to put out the fire—leaving Norta as Mare knows it to burn all the way down.

My Thoughts: Introduction

Unlike the previous two novels, Red Queen and Glass Sword, which contain crazy and mind-blowing plot twists, King’s Cage does not contain any of those. But, King’s Cage surprised me with new characters, unique storyline, twisted Maven, strong Mare, desperate Cal, awesome Cameron and (I actually feel sorry for) Evangeline.

This book is action-packed, full of awesome and peculiar abilities, new newbloods, some really funny scenes and scenes that made me want to be as badass as Mare!

The pacing for this book was really slow in the beginning. But, at about 250 pages in, the pacing for this book started to pick up and I really enjoyed the overall pacing.

Writing:

The writing style for this book was stylistic, very crisp and super articulate. I really loved how she wrote about flashbacks of some characters in this book because not many people have the ability to elaborate on flashbacks.

And she kept her writing consistence for all three mind-twisiting books. That alone is just awesome, because consistency is very important in books.

In my personal opinion, the plot/storyline for this book was way better than the previous two. Everything that happened in this book wasn’t as mind-blowing as the previous two, like I have said earlier, but, this book…People..THIS BOOK IS FANTASTIC!

Characters:

Mare Barrow: BIGGEST CHARACTER GROWTH EVER! In this book, Mare realizes that she hurt the people that love her and she feels regret and sadness. She did ask for forgiveness and they did forgive her. (I really liked the idea of forgiveness in this book!)

Maven Calore: Oh my goodness, Maven. He is so wrong.. Everything about him is wrong. He knows he is doing the bad thing but [Spoiler]. I just can’t.. He is so twisted because of [Spoiler]

Cal: I liked him even more in the third installment of Red Queen. He belonged to Mare and Mare belonged to him but unfortunately, [Spoiler]

Evangeline: Honestly, deep down in my heart, I pitied Evangeline. It’s not her fault that she’s such a b*.. It is her [Spoiler]. She was raised to be a cruel and a merciless person.. That’s why she is so.. yeah. Evangeline has a really good character growth in this book as well! I loved seeing that in her POV.

Overall:

I give this book a 98.5% rating. This is my favorite in the series so far and I am looking forward on reading the next book in the series! Two Words: Can’t Wait!

Spoilery Section:

“Reds are inferior, beneath us. That is the work of biology. Life itself knows we are their master. Why else our Silvers? Why else are we their gods, if not to rule them?”- King’s Cage, Victoria Aveyard.

Can we talk about Nanny’s death? I didn’t even see that coming. My tears fell when Nanny died in front of Mare.. In front of the whole court. I can’t even process her death in my brain right now, it’s just.. SAD!

And Oh My Goodness, how twisted Maven is! Guess who made him this way? Answer: Freaking-Dumb Queen Elara! I am really glad she is dead though, but Maven is still the same and I really feel sorry for him.

The Premier of Montfort. Can we trust him or should we not trust him? I really don’t know because he took and kept Prince Brackens children in a prison which he called “Room” in order to have the military bases in Piedmont.

Oh, and Cal’s betrayal. Thinking about that betrayal makes me mad. Why did he choose the crown over Mare? After what he had promised to Mare.. LIES LIES LIES. I just.. Oh my goodness.. I need the next book right now!

“I now know, I didn’t know what love was. Or what even the echo of heartbreak felt like.”- King’s Cage, Victoria Aveyard.

This is the end of my spoiler and spoiler-free review! I hope you all enjoyed it and follow me with your email/wordpress account to get notifications when I post a new article! Bye!

  3. I can’t wait for the next one. I honestly hated and loved the ending of this book so much. I hated it because it kind of left you hanging with a “no! This can’t be happening!” Feel. Yet, as a writer myself, it was the perfect ending to make everyone want to buy the next book.

  4. I read and reviewed this book a few weeks ago, so it was awesome to read your review and see what you thought about it. I can’t believe there’s only one book left in the series.

I’m new to blogging and book reviewing, and am very impressed by your blog. I was wondering if you had any tips for newbie bloggers and book reviewers.

  5. I don’t see that you’ve read the Percy Jackson books by Rick Riordan. You might enjoy those. There are two series: Percy Jackson and the Olympians, and then the followup series of Heroes of Olympus. These two focus on Greek/Roman mythologies (as the basis of modern stories). He also did a 3 book set involving Egyptian mythologies. I didn’t enjoy the latter series as much, but that may just be me. I couldn’t get into the Egyptian mythologies as well as I could the Greek/Roman ones, perhaps because of less familiarity with them. But many others love them as much as the Percy Jackson books. (Word to the Wise: Do NOT watch the Percy Jackson movies. They are in no way representative of the books.)
