“No more nobility, Nikolai. I’m tired of wasting time when every day is a day I struggle to hold on to. I thought I came here to feel normal, but I realize now I came here because I want to be with you if that’s something you still want.”- The Wheel Mages, Aimee Davis.

Synopsis:

Alena Kozlov is one of the last of a dying kind. As the first water mage to be inducted into the Sanctum in over fifty years, she has the opportunity to help the old order destroy a band of rebel mages who threaten the principles the Sanctum is founded upon.

Blinded by loyalty to the Sanctum and love for her master, Alena and three other mages set out to investigate the rebels, but the more she discovers, the less she understands.

Confronted with hard truths about the Sanctum she once believed in and the corruption she sees within it, Alena must make one of the most difficult decisions of her life: follow the path she’s trained for or leave the Sanctum behind.

Whatever the answer, she knows one thing for sure—the old Sanctum saying is true: It is a rocky road she must travel.

Writing:

Aimee’s writing style for this book was emphatic, eloquent and crisp. I really love her writing style for this book. The pacing for this book was fast and the entire book was filled with action-packed scenes and Oh! Those plot twists! I didn’t even see them coming! They came abruptly and more plot twists followed right after that.

World-Building:

I am actually a little confused with the world..

1. Were the characters living in the Victorian Era?

2. How did their magic manifest?

I hope all the questions will be answered in the next book.

Characters:

Alena: She’s the main character in this book. I noticed that her character development went up as I went deeper into the book because at the beginning of the book, she was a really weak character but everything changed soon after that.

Nikolai: I loved the relationship that Alena and Nikolai have. I shipped them together but unfortunately, [Spoiler].

Catalina: I utterly disliked her at the beginning of the book, but I have grown to love her soon after that because of the things she did in order to keep Alena safe.

Felipe: His character development was Good! I mean VERY GOOD! But at some point of the book, he made me cringed because of [Spoiler].

Overall:

I give this book an 81.87%. I recommend this book to people who loves high-fantasy and also, to people who love NA/YA novels!

This is the end of my spoiler-free review! I hope you all enjoyed it and follow me with your email/wordpress account to get notifications when I post a new article! Bye!

  1. So, NA has officially become a Genre? I remember [and not to long ago, perhaps 3-4 years ago] when the Genre was in the talks of being coined; I am glad to finally see that it has been. Must get back into the groove of re`querying Agents!

So, to the book … Admire the enthusiasm and the excellent review. Usually in sequels much is disclosed in regards to the first which leaves opportunity for growth. I look forward to stealing a peek … ;)!
